Adopting A Shelter Cat

June 1, 2022
Did you know that June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month? There’s no bad time to get a kitty, and a shelter is of course always a purrfect way to get your new pet. A Burlington, ON vet discusses getting Fluffy from a shelter in this article.

Benefits

There are some great reasons to get your feline pal from a shelter. For one thing, you’ll be able to choose your kitty from a lineup of adorable furballs. With the variety of cute cats up for adoption, you’ll probably find the purrfect match. You’ll also save some money, which is always a bonus. Plus, you’ll be helping promote good animal welfare. The funds and freed-up space will help the shelter provide care for other homeless animals.

Finding Fluffy

Sometimes people only glance at a kitty to feel a connection and know they’ve found their pet. It’s hard to say no when Fluffy grabs your sleeve with her claw as you walk past! However, picking the right pet isn’t always easy. Spend some time with your new furry friend before deciding. It’s also important to keep an open heart. Don’t overlook that sad senior cat or the shy stray nobody wants. Sometimes the unwanted pets make the best animal companions, as they have so much love to offer.

Getting Ready

You’ll want to hit the pet store before bringing Fluffy home. You’ll need kitty basics, such as food, treats, toys, litter, and, of course, catnip. We also recommend getting a travel carrier and a good cat tower and/or scratching post. If you have a large home and/or other pets, you’ll want to put these in a quiet room, so your new buddy has a private space to relax and get settled.

Settling In

One of the first things you’ll want to do is take Fluffy to meet her new doctor. Aside from that, just give your furball time to get used to her new surroundings. If you have other pets, keep them and your new arrival separate until your vet gives the all-clear.

Love

Never force attention on Fluffy. It’s important to let your kitty approach you on her own! Just be prepared: your heart may melt the first time your feline buddy purrs or snuggles with you. Cats are truly precious! As your Burlington, ON animal clinic, we’re always here to help. Call us anytime!
