Bonding With Your Kitten

May 2, 2022
Adopting a new kitten can be lots of fun. It also counts as a major life event in our book. You’re starting out on a long, beautiful friendship with your new pet, so it’s important to make sure you are getting started out on the right paw with her. Read on as a Burlington, ON vet offers some advice on bonding with little Fluffy.

Attention

Did you know that many cats think of their owners as second parents? However, that bond has to be established, and then nourished. One way to do that? Just cuddle and pet your feline buddy, so she feels safe.

Playtime

Playing is very important! When you hold that laser pointer for little Fluffy to pounce on, she’ll know you’re doing something for her benefit. That will score you some points!

Conversation

The jury is still out on how much language cats understand, but we do know they like being spoken to. Talk to your furry buddy in a gentle, soothing voice. You may see her blink slowly, flick her tail, or maybe start rubbing against you or head butting you. Some kitties even meow back! The more you interact with your pet, the more responsive she’ll become.

Grooming

Mama cats groom their babies, so it’s no surprise that brushing your feline friend will make her feel loved and safe. As far as baths, you don’t absolutely have to bathe little Fluffy, but it’s not a terrible idea to get her used to the process. Just be sure to get the vet’s all-clear first.

The Good Life

Cats are definitely capable of understanding when someone has helped them. Just feeding your pet and providing her basics, such as good food, fresh water, and a clean litterbox, will win you some points. However, little Fluffy will also appreciate having things like cat furniture, fun toys, comfy beds, and scratching posts. Small touches can go a long way towards pleasing our feline overlords!

Positive Reinforcement

You’ll have quite a bit of pet parenting ahead of you over the next few months, as you teach your feline pal the do’s and don’ts of being a cat. Be sure to use positive reinforcement with your furry little toddler! Rewarding little Fluffy for behaving is much more effective than reprimanding her.
