Hug Your Dog Day

April 1, 2022
Did you know that April 10th is Hug Your Dog Day? We’re all on board with that idea! Our canine companions definitely deserve to be celebrated. Fido needs to feel loved in order to truly be content. However, there are a few caveats when it comes to hugging dogs. A local Burlington, ON vet offers some insight on this pawesome topic below.

Rules For Hugging Fido

First and foremost, you should never try to hug a strange dog. Hugs are signs of affection, comfort, and love between humans, but they translate into signs of dominance and even aggression in doggy language. Your pet may not mind if you hug him, and he may even enjoy it. However, trying to hug a pooch that looks scared or uneasy is a definite faux paws, and could even get you bit!

Dogs That Don’t Like Hugs

Never force a hug on a dog that doesn’t want one. If Fido doesn’t seem comfortable with hugs, there are other ways you can get his tail going. Toys, treats, ear scritches, and belly rubs are all some of life’s greatest gifts as far as Man’s Best Friend is concerned! You can also pamper your pup with a fun play session, a comfy new bed, or a trip to the park!

Cuddly Dogs

Some of our smallest canine friends are quite the little cuddlebugs, and love to be held and hugged. This makes sense, because many smaller breeds, such as the Pomeranian, Maltese, and Shih Tzu, were developed specifically to be companion animals. Many of these guys want to be petted and snuggled 24/7! (Tip: You may want to teach your furry buddy that he’ll get picked up if he puts his paw on your leg.)

Helping Dogs That Need Hugs

There are still far too many cute, sweet pups in shelters, who really only want someone to adopt them, take them home, and offer them love and affection. If you’re ready to adopt a new pet, this would be a perfect time. If that’s not right for you at this time, you can always consider helping out in other ways. You can make donations, or offer your services as a volunteer. Every little bit helps! Please reach out with any questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care. As your local Burlington, ON animal clinic, we are here for you!
