Even though many people rushed out to adopt furry friends during the pandemic, there are still far too many sweet animals out there that need loving homes. Keeping your pet from adding to these numbers is simply the responsible thing to do. You’ll also benefit: pets that have been fixed are calmer, better behaved, and less prone to certain types of mischief and mayhem. For example, your four-legged friend will be much less likely to spray afterwards, and won’t be interested in trying to run off in search of love. Another added benefit for cat owners? Making The Appointment

Spay/neuter surgery is very routine, and is extremely safe. One question you may have is when to schedule the procedure. If your furry buddy is very young, ask your vet about this. It used to be standard procedure for puppies and kittens to be spayed at just 8 or 9 weeks, but there’s been a recent trend of veterinarians preferring to wait a bit longer. However, even if your pet is fully grown, you can still get them fixed. If you can, try to make the appointment so that you can be home for at least the first day with your pet. Needless to say, if you are working at home, this won’t be an issue.

Recuperating

Pets bounce back from this routine procedure pretty quickly. However, they will benefit from some extra TLC as they are recuperating. Make sure your four-legged friend has a comfy bed to relax in as they are recovering. You’ll also want to keep a close eye on the surgical site. If you notice anything concerning, such as discoloration, pus, bleeding, foul odors, swelling, or heat, contact your vet immediately. You’ll also want to refrain from encouraging your pet to run or play vigorously until your vet gives the all-clear. Finally, read the after-care instructions carefully, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
