Taking Your Cat to the Vet

January 15, 2021

Has it been a while since your kitty has visited her doctor? We know, your feline pal would probably prefer to take another nap than to come and see us. However, proper care is crucial to Fluffy’s health! A Burlington, ON vet offers a few tips on bringing your cat to the vet in this article.

Most kitties should come in once a year. However, Fluffy will need to see us a few times during her kittenhood. Baby cats will need their initial exams and vaccinations, as well as microchipping and spay/neuter surgery. Adult furballs are often fine with annual visits, though your furry friend may need more frequent appointments if she is allowed to go outdoors. Senior cats also benefit from coming in more often. Just like people, pets become more prone to developing certain illnesses as they grow older. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Signs of Illness

Keep an eye out for indications that your kitty isn’t feeling well. These can be subtle! Pay close attention to your pet, and interact with her daily. This will help you spot anything that is out of the ordinary. Some red flags include vomiting, diarrhea, poor grooming, litterbox woes, withdrawal, grumpiness, and changes in appetite, appearance, vocalizations, or behavior. Lethargy, fever, and respiratory issues are also warning signs. You may also notice Fluffy acting out of character. For instance, an aloof cat may suddenly get clingy, or vice versa. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these. Because cats often try to hide signs of illness, you may not notice that anything is off until your feline friend is very sick.

The Trip

We probably don’t have to tell you that, unlike dogs, cats are generally not very fond of car rides. (Actually, Fluffy thinks cars are evil robots hurtling her towards certain doom.) To make the trip easier on your pet, add some comfy bedding to her carrier. Also, try to avoid bumps, sharp turns, and sudden stops or starts. It may also help to keep the carrier out sometimes, just to let your cute pet get more familiar with it. When you get home again, give your feline buddy some toys and treats, and perhaps some catnip.
