Getting Fido Ready for Winter

November 1, 2020

Winter isn’t far off now! We know, many people have mixed feelings about the cold. Some of you probably can’t wait to go skiing and snowmobiling, while others are already longing for spring. Our furry patients are also split on the topic. Some pups, like snow dogs, love to run and play in the snow. Others will just give you that accusing look the second they have to take a walk on cold ground, and run for their doggy beds as soon as they’ve finished their business. Regardless of his opinion on the matter, your pooch will need some extra TLC when it’s cold. A Burlington, ON vet discusses getting your pet ready for winter in this article.

Clothes

Dogs with thin fur need a bit of extra protection against those biting winds. If Fido wears jackets or sweaters, take time to inspect his things. Everything should be clean, fit comfortably, and still be in good condition.

Food

If your four-legged friend spends a lot of time outdoors, or is a thin pup, a working dog, or a nursing mama, they may benefit from eating larger portions. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Playtime

Dogs don’t get as much activity in winter as they do in summer. Get into the habit of playing with Fido every night. There are lots of things you can do inside. Even Fetch can be an indoor game! Just choose a spot that doesn’t have a lot of breakables.

Soreness

Cold, damp weather often aggravates conditions like arthritis and hip dysplasia. If Fido has any type of bone/joint disorder, he may benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Paw Care

Don’t forget that Fido is running around barefoot! Snow, ice, salt, and sand can all do a number on your pet’s paws. If your canine buddy won’t go for wearing booties, use paw balm to protect his feet. This will also help prevent dryness and cracking. We recommend stocking up on pet-safe antifreeze as well.

Comfy Bedding

Fido will probably spend a lot of time in his doggy bed. Make sure that it’s clean, and is still thick enough to give him good support. Your pooch may also appreciate a thermal blanket, or even a heated bed.
