Taking Fido to the Park

Summer is here, and not a minute too soon. This may very well be many of our furry patients’ favorite time of year! After all, Fido gets to run and play outside, sniff all the grass, and, hopefully, visit a dog park. In fact, taking your pup to the park is a great way to enjoy a beautiful day. Read on for some great tips from a Burlington, ON vet on taking your canine pal to the park.

Before taking your four-legged friend to the park, make sure that he is microchipped and wearing ID tags. He should also be current on all of his vaccines and parasite control products. 

It may be tempting to bring treats along for your canine companion, or perhaps to grab lunch for yourself while your pet runs and plays with his pals. However, you’ll want to be careful with this. Fido’s buddies will soon notice that you have food, and will definitely show interest. You could cause quite a stir! Be discreet, and don’t bring anything that will give off a strong scent.

Always pick up after your pooch! Keep plenty of waste baggies in your car, so you always have some.

It’s always good for dogs to interact with other pooches. Fido does need to spend time with his buddies, and just enjoy being a dog. However, you do want to screen your pet’s playmates. Before letting your canine buddy go off-leash, observe the dogs in the park. If you see pups that are being aggressive or bullying, take your furry pal for a walk and come back later.

Dogs can quickly get hot and thirsty when they are running and playing with their pals. Although many parks do offer water fountains or faucets, it’s best to bring some water with you, just in case. You may want to get collapsible plastic dishes, or a doggy water bottle with an attached bowl.

It’s probably safe to say that the coronavirus will be with us for a while. Follow current guidelines. Try to stay a safe distance away from others. Bring hand sanitizer with you. When you get home, wash your hands, and wipe your canine buddy down. Better safe than sorry!
