5 Ways to Keep Your Dog’s Teeth Healthy

April 15, 2020

Did you know that dental issues are one of the most common problems we see in our canine patients? Gum disease is very prevalent in dogs. Fido has also been known to crack or break his teeth playing with hard objects. These issues can be quite painful for Man’s Best Friend! Fortunately, there are things you can do to keep your pet’s choppers healthy. A Burlington, ON vet lists some of them below.

Brushing

Brushing is definitely the best option here. You’ll need to give Fido time to get used to the idea, however. Start by just gently rubbing your furry friend’s teeth and gums with your finger. Incorporate lots of praise and ear scratches. This is very important! You want your pet to form a pleasant impression about the process. When your pup is used to this idea, you can start to incorporate a doggy toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Remember to give your canine buddy a treat after to get that cute tail going!

Dental-Formula Treats

Some pooches just won’t sit still for toothbrushing time. You don’t want to force Fido to submit. If your dog isn’t having it, look into other options instead. Dental-formula treats, kibble, and chews can all be beneficial.

Water

Hydration is of course crucial to your furry buddy’s survival, but it’s also important for his oral health. Water will rinse food particles away, which will help keep Fido’s teeth clean. Make sure your pup always has plenty of fresh H20. You may want to get your pooch a pet fountain. Many dogs prefer to drink running water!

Doggy Dental Products

Dental-formula treats are great, but they aren’t the only options. There are also other products, such as dental flakes and oral rinses, which can help keep your canine pal’s choppers healthy. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Examinations

When it comes to treating dental troubles in pets, early detection is very helpful. We recommend having your pup’s choppers checked at least once a year, starting at age one. You’ll also want to watch for warning signs, such as bad breath, tartar buildup, bleeding gums, ropy or excessive drool, reduced interest in play, and/or changes in eating habits. Call your vet right away if you notice any of these red flags.
