Cold Weather Care for Dogs

November 15, 2019

Winter is coming fast! As you pull your heavy clothes and boots out of storage, don’t forget about your canine companion. Every time the seasons change, you’ll need to tweak your dog’s care regimen a bit. In this article, a Burlington, ON vet discusses winter dog care.

Paw Care

Snow, salt, sand, ice, and chemical melting agents can all hurt Fido’s sensitive paw pads. Opt for pet-safe de-icing products, and use paw balm to protect and moisturize those furry feet.

Grooming

Dead fur and dander can actually interfere with the insulating properties of Fido’s coat. Keep up with your dog’s grooming needs! Don’t forget about parasite control. Fleas and ticks will try to get inside when it’s cold, and can make pets miserably itchy.

Beds

Make sure Fido has a comfy bed to snuggle up in. Pooches with thin fur may appreciate heated beds, and/or thermal doggy blankets. Be sure to wash your pet’s bedding regularly.

Walks

Be extra vigilant when walking Fido in cold weather. Stay away from areas that could be dangerous, like frozen bodies of water. Fresh snow is also a concern, as it can hide dangerous objects, like broken glass.

Food

Some pups will need larger servings at this time of year. Fido may also benefit from certain supplements. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Clothing

If you have a snow dog, like a husky, you can probably skip this one. These guys absolutely love to romp and play in the snow! However, if Fido has thin fur, he will need some jackets to give him extra protection against the cold. Make sure your canine friend’s clothes fit properly, and are not tight or restricting.

Weather

Limit your furry pal’s outdoor time when it’s really cold out. Dogs are just as susceptible to and uncomfortable in frigid cold as we are! Fido will be happier, healthier, and much more comfortable living indoors.

Exercise

Fido may be cooped up inside the house for most of the winter, but don’t let him become a complete couch potato. Keep your four-legged friend active by playing with him indoors. You can play Fetch inside, assuming you have enough room. You can also hold a laser pointer, so your pup can chase that red dot.
