Caring for Fido’s Paws

December 1, 2018

Does your pup know how to Shake or Gimme Five ? Dogs can learn some pretty cute tricks with their paws. Fido may also put his paw on your leg when he wants to show affection or perhaps score some ear scritches. Actually, your pet’s paws are crucial to his health and well-being. Therefore, it’s important for you to take care of them. Here, a Burlington, ON vet discusses caring for your dog’s paws.

Nails

Did you know that overgrown nails are very uncomfortable for Fido? Your furry pal may change his gait to compensate. Unfortunately, this ends up putting extra stress on your pup’s bones and joints. Over time, this can contribute to or exacerbate painful medical conditions, like arthritis. Of course, many people are nervous about cutting their dogs’ nails. If you are uneasy giving your pet a pawdicure, consider getting some clippers that have sensors. These will indicate exactly where to cut. You can also ask your vet to demonstrate proper techniques. Of course, you can also call us to schedule a nail trim!

Fur

Does your pooch have those adorable toe-fur tufts? You may want to trim these, especially in winter. They can gather ice balls, which is pretty uncomfortable for Fido. They can also get gunky and matted, or trap foreign objects.

Paw Pads

Don’t forget that your canine buddy is running around barefoot! In summer, Fido can burn his feet on hot tar, sand, or asphalt. Winter is also hard on your dog’s paws. Salt, snow, sand, ice, and chemical melting agents can cause painful abrasions. Choose only pet-safe de-icing products, and use paw balm or wax on your furry friend’s paw pads.

Walking Tips

Keep an eye on the ground as you are walking your dog, especially in winter, when snow and ice can cover dangerous objects, like broken glass. Stay away from dangerous areas, such as construction sites, riverbanks and drop-offs, and unlit streets. We also recommend checking your dog’s paws regularly for signs of injury, such as heat, visible cuts, and/or swelling.

Paw Care Hack

Does Fido hate having his feet handled? Teach him that he will get a yummy treat when he gives you his paw. You may find that your pooch completely changes his opinion!
