4 Tips for a Happy, Healthy Cat

November 15, 2018

There are many things to love about our feline friends. Fluffy is cute, funny, loving, cuddly (at least sometimes), and charming. She’s also an easy keeper. However, kitties do need proper care in order to truly thrive. Here, a Brant Hills, ON vet discusses keeping your kitty happy, healthy, and purring.

Provide Good Food

A proper diet will go a long way towards keeping your cat in good health. Canned food and dry food both have their own pros and cons, so ask your vet for specific advice. As for treats, there’s nothing wrong with giving Fluffy snacks. Just stick to safe options, and don’t go overboard.

Take Fluffy To The Vet

Make sure that Fluffy sees the vet regularly! Your kitty should be fixed and microchipped. It’s best if this is done when cats are still young, but these procedures can safely be performed on adult kitties, too. Keeping up with exams, vaccinations, and parasite control is also important. If you notice any signs of illness, such as poor grooming, hiding, litterbox woes, or a lack of appetite, call your vet immediately.

Keep Kitty Safe

Cats are very playful and curious, and have a habit of getting into mischief. Do some basic catproofing to make your home safe for Fluffy. Remove or secure toxic plants, small or sharp objects, plastic bags and wrappers, and anything with ropes, wires, or thread. We also strongly recommend keeping your kitty indoors, where she will be protected from cars, predators, weather, and other hazards.

Activate The Purr

We all know that kitties love to nap, but your cute pet will get bored and unhappy with nothing to do but sit around all day. Make sure your furry pal has lots of fun toys. Classic options, like catnip mice, are fine, but you can also give Fluffy more modern toys, like catnip bubbles or robotic squirrels. Your furball will also appreciate having some cat furniture. Cat towers are great, as they provide kitties with scratching posts, napping spots, lookout points, and jungle gyms! We also recommend playing with your cat regularly. This will benefit her both physically and mentally. Plus, it’s fun! Last but not least, pay lots of attention to Fluffy, and make sure she feels loved and safe.
